This piece is based on a photograph of a “chorten” —a Buddhist reliquary monument. The photograph was used as the substrate for an encaustic wax monotype, which was then mounted on a cradled wood panel.
I took this photo while living in Bhutan in 2009. I was hired by several of the luxury hotels in the Paro Valley to teach yoga to their guests. I lived in a tiny dilapidated shack and passed this chorten on my walk to work each morning.
What struck me about this experience was that spirituality is just an everyday part of life in Bhutan. This is something I think many cultures can learn from.
We are spiritual beings having an earthly experience. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if we remembered that.
There is an especially mysterious quality to this piece that brings magic and spiritual blessings.
